If a Taylor Whig whom you have heretofore heard speaking against the war and all who fought its battles, asks you why you intend voting for Gen. Cass, give him the following answer:
Firstly.—I will vote for Cass, because he draughted the law under which Aaron Burr was tried for treason to his country.
Secondly.—Because Thomas Jefferson, the great Democratic apostle, upwards of forty years ago, had confidence sufficient in Lewis Cass, to make him marshal of the then territory of Ohio.
Thirdly.—Because Lewis Cass, in the last war with our implacable enemy, Great Britain, was the first man who entered Canada; and had his wise counsels been adopted, the British provinces might now form an integral part of our glorious confederation.
Fourthly.—Because Lewis Cass has proved himself an able negotiator, inasmuch as he completed twenty one treaties with the Indians, none of which has ever been disputed by that wild, wandering and indomitable race.
Fifthly.—Because that great and good patriot, Andrew Jackson, imitating his illustrious prototype, called Lewis Cass to his councils, by making him Secretary of War.
Sixthly.—Because Lewis Cass, when our minister to France, circumvented and annihilated the wiles and schemes of our inveterate foe when the quintuple alliances were formed under the influence of Great Britain, which would have left our shipping at the mercy of English cruisers, and would have deprived us of our rights to the highway of nations.
Seventhly.—Because Lewis Cass, in the celebrated discussion on the Oregon question, boldly, fearlessly, and honestly advocated our right of territory up to 54 40, notwithstanding the intimidation of the emissaries of England.
Eighthly.—Because Lewis Cass is the candidate of that party which has always been the consistent advocate of human rights, of freedom of opinion, and of liberty of conscience.
Ninthly.—Because that party has guaranteed to adopted citizens the same rights, protection, and privileges which it has and does to citizens of native birth; and because it scattered to the four winds of Heaven the odious alien, gagging, and sedition laws.
Tenthly and lastly.—Because, as Lewis Cass will be triumphantly elected, he will not submit to the foreign dictation of Great Britain, but will, if that haughty and overbearing power dare insult our country, take ample vengeance upon her for all the wrongs she has inflicted upon the human race in every quarter of the globe, and will ignominiously expel her from the shores of this continent; thus affording an opportunity to the brave but oppressed Irish nation to recover its long lost nationality.
