On Wednesday last, this unfortunate gentleman suffered the sentence of the law at Armagh. When he found no hopes of a pardon were to be entertained, he hurried the hour of his execution, and appeared impatient to die. He repeatedly supplicated that he might be shot; but this, for obvious reasons, was refused—At 12 o'clock he was led out for execution, and the moment he made his appearance, the entire of the guards took off their caps and he, in return, saluted them. His father-in-law and another gentleman remained with him all the time of his confinement, and received his corpse, which is to be taken to his native country, Scotland, for interment. During the time of the awful and affectionate ceremony, we are informed that an officer of another corps took the guard, while the regiment was confined to their barracks. It is truly lamentable, that the arm of the law, in striking the guilty, must reach the innocent.—This unfortunate man, has left a distracted widow and five children; and captain Boyd, who fell by his hand, had a wife and seven; sixteen victims immolated at the bloody tribunal of false honor.
The lady of the unhappy sufferer was incessant in her application to obtain the Royal mercy in behalf of her husband. On her knees she solicited in the most pathetic terms the intercession not only of her Majesty, but of all the Princesses: She also went to Brighton to wait on his royal highness the prince of Wales, who, with that generosity which so much distinguishes his character, immediately wrote a note to the duke of Portland, which Mrs Campbell presented to his Grace; but her application was unsuccessful. We most sincerely wish that the unhappy fate of this man may prove a warning to others, who are governed either by passion, or by principles of honor, falsely so called; & be the means of putting an end to a practice disgraceful to civilized society.
