What is this article about?
An editorial critiques the expansion of manufactures in Rhode Island, noting how factories near Providence have driven up land values from $8 to $100 per acre, consumed local produce, and inconvenienced farmers. It sarcastically suggests that shutting down mills under the current administration would allow urban buyers to purchase rural goods cheaply.

Two years ago a gentleman of this town purchased 90 acres of land in the vicinity of a little stream, not twenty miles from this place, for 8 dollars an acre. Since then a factory has been put in operation, and a village of five or six houses been established. A short time ago half an acre of the same land sold for one hundred dollars. The farmers in the neighborhood, besides having their lands increasing in value on their hands, are put to the inconvenience of sending their produce to the factory, where something like $8000 a year worth of it is consumed, instead of being sent 17 miles to Providence. Similar evil effects of manufactures exist all over this state. Should the American system be put down by the present administration, and the mills be shut up, we should doubtless have the pleasure of seeing more of our friends from the country, and buying their produce at our own prices, though it may be doubted whether we should be able to buy much of it at any price.
