Extract of a letter from Accomack county, Virginia, dated July 30.

On Sunday night, the 26th inst. came on Gargotha beach, about the lat. 38, N. six seamen in an open boat, by name, Benjamin Cawley, Thomas Brown, John M'Kean, Peter Joseph, Lewis Brandoe, and Matt. Turan.--They inform, that on the Thursday night preceding their landing, they together with their Captain, Mate and four other men, who betook themselves to another boat, abandoned the Brig Maria, Capt. Sebastian Oliver, from Port-au-Prince, bound to New-York; that they kept in company with their Captain and his boat's crew until about 24 hours before they reached the shore, when they were obliged to put away on account of a high wind and leakiness of the boat, these men having been refreshed by the inhabitants, are gone on their way to Norfolk. They say that the brig foundered near the Gulph Stream, about lat. 39; and they suppose the other part of the crew, if safe, to have landed a little to the southward of Cape Henlopen.

Aug. 11. The six seamen mentioned in a letter from Accomack, dated the 30th ult. and published in our paper of yesterday, proceeded from thence to Norfolk and Portsmouth; by the conduct of one of them suspicion arose in the breast of the landlord that he had committed some criminal act. and from those suspicions he examined into the bundles of the seamen at his house, and found a quantity of valuable linen and other clothes made up, which convinced him that they had committed a robbery: he therefore gave information to a magistrate, who attended the house with a constable. and secured the fellow most suspected, an Irishman by birth, who confessed that they had thrown their captain overboard; the cook upon discovering it, attempted to save him by throwing over a rope which he seized, by which with assistance he might have been brought on board, but for their sending the cook after him, both of them perished in their presence; that the rest of the crew proceeded to distribute the goods and effects of the captain which were portable; and after doing this they proceeded for the land; that as soon as they got near the shore, and in good weather, they scuttled the vessel, took to the boat, and landed as described in the letter from Accomack; they were all seized and safely lodged in Norfolk county gaol.
