MEMPHIS. Tenn. (ANP)Some 51 boys and girls will receive scholarships for 1954-55 under the school aid program of the Improved Benevolent Protective Order Elks of the World.
The announcement was made last week by George W. Lee. grand commissioner of education for the Elks.
Organized in 1927. the department has provided more than 800 college and university scholarships to Negro youth
List Objectives
In giving the objective for 1954-55, Lee said.
"In addition to our scholarship program where we are saving hundreds of young men and women from the grind of poverty or the lack of opportunity we are launching a new historic venture in Adult Education designed to off-set tensions expected with desegregation throughout the country.
The new venture will be in the form of forums which will be conducted by the Elks in the lodges and temples. in the churches and in the lodge halls of the various communities.
Forum Purposes
Purpose of the forums, according to Lee. will be to bring together both'white and colored of the community wherever possible "to impress upon the people the necessity of meeting coming changes with good conduct. good manners and fair play.
Grand Exalted Ruler Robert H. Johnson said national emphasis will be focused on the Elks forums during National Citizenship Dinner at Howard University on Jan 31 with Vice-President Richard Nixon as one of the principal speakers.
