"We have been informed the French intend us a visit, but we are very well prepared to give them such a reception as they deserve. An act of the legislature of this island, and the Grenadines (for calling out a militia) passed here some time ago, by which we got an additional strength of about 1400 men. Our worthy chief Governor, Lord Macartney, has taken uncommon pains, not only in pointing out to the
legislature here the necessity of such a law, but has, since the completion of it, appeared on all occasions, and on every alarm, the most active man amongst us."
