A writer in the National Intelligencer, under the signature of Cadmus, who states that he has had access to the most authentic official documents, has made a reply to statements which appeared in the Georgian of Savannah, and the Literary Cadet of Ohio, on the subject of our Navy, for the purpose of putting these Journals right on that subject. The Georgian had stated that our Navy, when all the vessels authorized by law are built, would consist of 14 ships of the line, 22 frigates, 13 ships of from 44 to 32 guns, 31 brigs and 14 schooners, besides gun-boats, barges and galleys; that the expense of a ship of the line in the service for one year would be $202,110, and of a frigate $134,210, exclusive of repairs. The expense of this Navy, the Literary Cadet estimated at eight millions per annum. Cadmus states that when all the vessels are built which Congress has authorized, our navy will consist of twelve ships of the line, fourteen 44 gun frigates, three 36 gun frigates, six sloops of war, two brigs, 10 schooners, six gun-boats, our galleys; four steam batteries and one block and one receiving ship. That the expense of a 74, including repairs, will only amount to $188,529.64, and a 44 gun frigate $133,985.33; a 36 gun frigate $110,557.19; a sloop $59,069.42; a brig $39,774.67; a schooner of larger size $23,350; of small size $16,452; a gun boat or galley $6,243; a steam battery $59,060.41; block ship $39,774.67; and a receiving ship $4,240.90. This statement shows the annual cost of each description of vessels in our Navy, by which it will be seen that when all the vessels are built now authorized, and are all in full commission, that the annual expense will amount to five millions, four hundred and six thousand, nine hundred dollars and eighty eight cents. To man the above vessels it would require, including officers, seamen, marines and boys, 22,670 persons. In the above statement the vessels on the lakes are not enumerated, as they are not considered a part of the regular Navy, besides, says the writer, "being constructed of very inferior green materials, they are really not worth even the trifling expense the nation is now subject to on their account."
