Before our Troops left Lake George, General Abercrombie sent a Flag of Truce to Monf. Montcalm, to know why Col. Schuyler, and the other Prisoners in Canada, were not returned, agreeable to the Engagement of the Governor of the Three Rivers, upon his Parole of Honour with Col. Bradstreet, at the taking of Fort Frontenac: To which an Answer was returned, that as the Prisoners lived at considerable Distances from each other, it would take some Time to collect them; and that the Engagement should be fulfilled: Accordingly, we hear from Albany, That the brave Colonel, Capt. Martin, Dr. Watts, Major Putnam of the Provincials, together with all the Prisoners which could be collected, Men, Women and Children, are arrived over the Lake, and some of them got to Fort Edward: The Truth of which Report we hope will soon be confirmed to many, by the Sight of their Friends from a tedious Captivity:--It is said, that as the Number of Prisoners exceed those taken at Frontenac, Col. Schuyler has engaged to send an equal Number sent from those which are in the Hands of the English. We should have said that the Reason given for clearing Canada of all the Prisoners, was that the French were in a starving Condition, but when we consider what Stores were found at Frontenac, &c. while the same Report prevail'd last Summer, very few would think it to be really the Case.

Event Details

General Abercrombie sent a flag of truce to Montcalm inquiring about the return of prisoners per agreement after Fort Frontenac's capture. French response indicated time needed to collect dispersed prisoners and commitment to fulfill engagement. Reports from Albany confirm arrival of Col. Schuyler, Capt. Martin, Dr. Watts, Major Putnam, and other collected prisoners over the lake to Fort Edward. Reason given for releasing prisoners was French starvation, doubted due to stores found at Frontenac.
