THE MUGWUMPS
The mugwumps in New York are having as hard a time as the mugwumps in Arizona. Even Mr. Cleveland has felt the necessity of mollifying and protecting the New York mugwumps, his friends. He says to the Democrats: "It is not necessary to abuse those who show an inclination to help us."
The poor mugwumps! They have always been treated with scant courtesy by the Democrats and when they stepped out to support Fassett the Democratic press broke out into reviling. They flung all sorts of ribald jests at their late allies and declared that they were a weakness, rather than a strength.
On the other hand the Republicans received them rather coldly and did not seem to expect very much from them.
Now that all is over and New York Democrats are gathered together to rejoice and New York Republicans are gathered together to mourn, the mugwumps are left out, shivering in the cold. They haven't even the poor comfort of being taken in to mourn with those who mourn and to help devour the funeral baked meats. At this juncture their friend Cleveland steps in to make intercession for them in the house of mirth. No doubt he too is chuckling in his capacious sleeve at their dilemma, but there are a few votes among them and he wants them next year. It remains to be seen what effect his plea will have.
