Full Text

The federalists must not divide. The more
a government is free and popular in its form,
the more is its fate entrusted to the sense and
virtue, in other words, to the federalism of
the citizens. To divide that party is to dig
up the foundations of liberty: it is taking
out the underpinning from its temple, and
exposing it to sudden and certain ruin. And
why should the federalists divide at present?
The Reasons for the mission to France are
not yet given to the public. Is it not shallow
to argue upon them before we can have
them. Time will soon afford the proper
ground of discussion, and enable candid men
to judge correctly.
