Good News
The construction of a public housing project of some 150 units has been approved for the city of Charlotte Amalie. The funds must be obligated before June 30, and Public Housing Administration officials, together with the local Housing Authority are expected to do everything possible to meet the deadline.
This is heartening news. Housing conditions in the islands are such that we shall need several projects of the size of the Pearson Gardens before the housing problem in these islands is licked. That we have been able to get this project approved at this time speaks very well for the interest which Public Housing Administration officials take in these islands.
There are certain important decisions that must soon be made, including the site of the new project. We believe that instead of trying to find vacant land, that authorities select for a site in an area where blighted and substandard homes exist and clear it. The Buck Hole-Ross Yard area immediately comes to mind. Perhaps it may be possible to synchronize the commencement of this new housing project with the completion of units at the Berg Homes so that any families who are displaced may find suitable housing accommodations.
