WICKFORD.
Says an esteemed correspondent " our progress is onward. 200 names have been added to our list since the year came in."
In speaking of the two taverns which have recently been purified. he says, one is situated " near the Devils foot."
A very appropriate place thought we. And in nearly all of our taverns, the Devil finds a resting place for the soles of his feet. Not half a mile distance from the spot where we are penning this article, there is a room where his satanic majesty may be seen hours and hours at all hours, accompanied by a vast cortege of poor miserable drunkards, In fine, it is a sort of wholesale drunkard manufactory, Wo be to that man who shall dare to enter its unhallowed precincts, and partake of the liquid fire which is continually boiling up and pouring in desolating torrents over that bar. Our hotels and taverns have been, not only the vestibules, but the grand saloons of temporal and eternal destruction. The smiling landlord, the cheerful fire and the social company of these bar-rooms have seduced many an upright, virtuous soul and plunged it into the very abyss of misery and despair. And yet our citizens will do nothing to rid them of the evil! "Tell it not in Gath."
