Infatuated Girl Surrenders Dowry of $3,000,000 for a Traveling Man.
Oelwein, Dec. 24.-Miss Elizabeth Van Stetland, the 17-year-old daughter of the late H. Van Stetland, the Minneapolis lumberman, has thrown away a fortune of $3,000,000 in order to be near Frederick Harmon, a New York traveling man.
Miss Van Stetland is now a prisoner at the central police station in Minneapolis, where she was placed at the request of her mother, after being arrested here, where she came to meet Harmon. She may be sent to a state institution until she is of age. Harmon was a friend of the late Mr. Van Stetland, and was by him introduced to the daughter, who fell in love with him.
A year ago she began meeting him here and at various cities in the northwest, telling her mother she was visiting her girl friends. A few days ago Mrs. Van Stetland learned of the conduct of her daughter and caused her arrest while stopping at the local hotel. The meeting between the mother and daughter was affecting.
The girl refused to give up her lover, saying she would rather lose every cent of the $3,000,000. By a provision of her father's will the girl will get no money if she refuses to drop Harmon.
