AN ODE FOR THE 4th JULY.

Forever live the great, th' auspicious day
Which blest with INDEPENDENCE Freedom's Sons!
Forever live in Free Men's memory,
Of this blest Isle. & of those distant lands,
Where nations, rous'd at Freedom's mighty call,
The word of war unsheath'd, resolv'd to fall,
Or their just rights reclaim, so long withheld.

Chorus—Or their just rights reclaim, so long withheld.
By tyrant power; nor will they tamely yield.
Freedom or Death's the order of the day,
The brave alternative is loud proclaim'd.
Proud priests and tyrants shall no longer sway—
We fear not death, of slavery are asham'd.

'Tis Heaven and Freedom call the world to arms,
And gladly we the sacred call obey—
In LIBERTY behold resistless charms!

Chorus—In Liberty behold resistless charms.
And see—to Victory SHE points the way.

AMERICA inspires—the nations rise
To snatch the power usurp'd by kings and priests;
To rip the mask from villains in disguise,
And straight fulfil the Almighty's great behests.
Remove the diadem, profanely worn,
No longer ruthless tyrants to adorn—
Undeify the Gods, profanely call'd:

Chorus—Undeify the Gods, profanely call'd,
Too long all climes and nations ye've enthrall'd.

My word's gone forth—the nations shall be free,
Nor longer be misled. but learn of me.

On THIS GLAD DAY, through all our coasts resound,
The shouts of joy and gratitude to Heaven,
For blessings great. inestimable given!
Artillery thunders, while each health goes round
The festive board, where Freemen joyful meet.

Chorus—The festive board, where FREEMEN joyful meet,
And tell the wonders heroes have perform'd.

Exploits of valour, Bards inspired proclaim,
With patriot zeal each generous breast is warm'd,
Alike with verse sublime, & music charm'd.
Their noble deeds, who fell, are brought to view,
(No page of history can equal shew:)
Tho' JEFFERSON Succeeds, of brilliant fame—
Unrivalled man, for elevated worth.

Chorus—Unrivalled man, for elevated worth,
By Sage or Statesman e'er of splendid name

ILLUSTRIOUS HEROES, STATESMEN, round him stand,
The pride and glory of this favor'd land!
Millions rejoice in worth their hearts approve,
On this Auspicious DAY, and hour their praise,
With one united voice, that rends the skies
Their wond'rous virtues nations round admire—
Their glorious actions set their souls on fire,

Chorus—Their glorious actions set their souls on fire,
To emulate the virtues. which they love,
