British Landlady Buries Tenant and
Finds Riches for Americans.

London.—A remarkable story
of
hidden treasure comes from Kew.
An American, aged about fifty, who
seemed to be in straightened circumstances and said he could pay only a
nominal sum, took a room at a small
house occupied by a Mrs. Medland.
After a time the visitor who lived the
life of a recluse and gave his name as
John Combe, became ill and died.

Rather than allow her lodger to be
buried by the parish, Mrs. Medland
bore the expense of the funeral.
Later Mrs. Medland was about to
give away some of the lodger's clothes
when she found one of the coats lined
with American notes to the amount
of $4500, while in a belt were documents of considerable value and $500
in cash. A further search revealed
the names of the dead man's American relatives. These were communicated with and are now on their way
to England.

An American aged about fifty, in straightened circumstances, rented a room from Mrs. Medland in Kew, living as a recluse under the name John Combe. He became ill and died. Mrs. Medland paid for his funeral to avoid parish burial. While preparing to give away his clothes, she found one coat lined with $4500 in American notes, a belt with $500 cash and valuable documents, and names of his American relatives, who were contacted and are traveling to England.
