Report of the committee appointed to procure the current prices of such articles as were deemed necessary to be made public, by the society.

The committee appointed by the Society at the last meeting, to collect and report such facts as, by being generally known, might best promote the views of the institution have endeavored to discharge the duties required of them in the best manner which the short time allowed them would permit.

The committee has thought proper to report the average quantity of the different kinds of produce which may be raised from a single acre of land cultivated with tolerable skill and industry. To this they have added the present price current of the different necessaries of life as selling in the Lexington market; and also the prices received by several different kinds of mechanics for their labor--it is further proper to observe that even at the advanced rates enumerated in the annexed list, tradesmen can engage more work than they can perform, and that much work is left undone for want of undertakers.

The committee also give it as their opinion that the prices of the necessaries of life will not greatly (if at all) exceed the rates enumerated in the list during the ensuing year unless the number of Emigrants should be much greater than in former years.

It is true that the last winter's severity has greatly injured the crops of wheat, and that the want of rain during the last summer months will prevent the corn from arriving at the degree of perfection experienced in more favorable seasons.--But when we calculate the abundant crops of the last year, and reflect that a very great proportion of those crops yet remains undisposed of, we have every reason to believe that the supply will be more than sufficient for the probable demand.

In one other fact the committee think it necessary to call the attention of the public -An unfavorable impression has been made on the minds of many who reside at a distance, by a report which has prevailed, that the citizens of this state were rapidly removing to the Spanish dominions on the Mississippi. This report is notoriously ill grounded, and we can boldly assert, that of the great number who have, by the artful representations of the interested, been induced to visit that country, very few indeed, have settled on any part of the Mississippi, whilst the far greater proportion have returned, disgusted with the Spanish government, and with an increased affection for Kentucky.
