CHURCH PRAYS

Preacher In Home
Town Says Actor
May Take Place Of
Famous Billy Sunday.

CADIZ, O., March 11—(AP)—Try
to picture Clark Gable, romantic
hero of the screen, lambasting the
devil from a pulpit
The Rev. Samuel K. Williams,
Methodist minister in Gable's home
town of Hopedale, says "the Lord
may yet make him a great evangel-
ist to take the place of Billy Sun-
day."

Right now Gable is "serving a
devil of lust," Mr. Williams said
today, "but if he will yield his
talents to God he will become a
great power for righteousness."

They prayed for "Hopedale's il-
lustrious son in church yesterday,
Mr. Williams said, and have been
doing so since last summer. Gable
has been dropped from the
church's membership rolls, he told
his congregation "but let us not
drop him from our prayer list."

The young evangelist, who
brought expressions of chagrin
from town admirers of the actor
last week by declaring Gable "is
not good company for our young
people," yesterday called him an
arch corrupter of youth by demon-
strating the art of lust upon the
screen.

"May God forgive us," he said
"may God forgive the one who
tutored him in this village to act
the part of a villain in which he
is said by natives to have excelled."

The pastor said Gable as a boy
liked the church, went to Sunday
school neatly dressed, and "sang
in children's day exercises in a
voice often heard above the oth-
ers."

He then was shy of the girls,
Mr. Williams said old friends re-
called, "and in his awkward ap-
pearance was nothing especially
to be desired."

"But now," the minister declared
"the tables have turned. Millions of
girls and women fall over each
other into the bright lights to see
him in voluptuous love scenes."
