The collection of the direct Tax in the state of North Carolina, has been delayed until after the election of Electors of President and Vice President. This information we had from a gentleman of great respectability, a resident of that state, & whose veracity cannot be doubted. The same gentleman also states that John Steele, comptroller of the treasury of the U. States, has been several months in that state electioneering, and has, no doubt, given the orders to the collectors to postpone the collecting of the Tax. These are means made use of by the federalists to accomplish their wicked designs: But the progress of Republicanism is rapidly foregoing in North Carolina, and Mr. Jefferson is almost certain of getting all the votes for President in that state.
