WILTON STORES
Burglar Stops for Luncheon
in Emerson and Proctor's Places
WILTON, Feb. 16.—Two business places were broken into in this town last night, William H. Emerson's clothing store and the Depot or Proctor general store. At the Emerson store clothing and traveling bags valued at between $150 and $200 were taken and at the other place miscellaneous articles and a luncheon were appropriated. In both places the money drawers were opened and what small change was left in them was stolen.
At the Proctor store the burglar helped himself to crackers, cheese and other eatables and remained there long enough to regale himself.
The Emerson store was entered through the front door, the large pane of glass being broken and the thief crawling through the hole thus made. A window of the Proctor store was forced open with a jimmy or large screw driver.
It is believed that a large man did the job, for he left his hat at the Emerson store in exchange for a new one and the discarded piece of headgear is of seven and a half size. He left his footprints in the snow, too and they indicate a No. 9 shoe.
Mr. Emerson's loss includes a black fur coat valued at $40, a rain coat, three sweaters, suitcases, handbags, suits of clothes and miscellaneous articles.
The police of neighboring cities and towns have been notified and a search is being made for the thief.
Eight years ago Mr. Emerson had a similar loss and a gang of burglars was rounded up at Lowell, Mass., and the loot was recovered.
It is believed that last night's break took place well along toward morning, for the steam was turned off in the store and had it occurred early the cold air coming in through the broken window would have been sufficient to make the store uncomfortably cold in the morning. As it was, the room was quite warm. It is figured that the break could not have been later than 4 o'clock.
