At four o'clock yesterday afternoon,
the advance of General Sigel's Division,
Gen. Cooper's brigade, left Camp Hill,
on the Charleston road. A dispatch was
received from the General at 5 o'clock
this morning, stating that he was beyond
Charlestown, and pushing forward to
Winchester. At the same time General
Banks, having crossed the Potomac, had
at last accounts, reached Bunker Hill,
but 12 miles from Winchester, and advancing
in the same direction. They
will form a junction at or near Winchester.
Fremont, having fallen back from
Franklin to Moorefield, advancing towards
Winchester, via Strasburg, and on Sunday
his advance was met at a small village
south of Winchester, and repulsed
with severe loss. While Jackson was
engaging him, the forces under General
Shields pushed north from Front Royal,
which was re-taken on Friday last, and
came up in the rear, affecting a junction
with Fremont and advancing to Winchester,
which they now hold.
Such are the movements, as near as
they can be made out from the conflicting
and confused accounts which come
from our front this morning. Of one
thing you may be assured: the re-possession
of the Virginia Valley will be as
rapid as was the retreat from it. The
forces that will be concentrated at Winchester
by to-morrow night will be sufficient
to cope with the enemy even if his
force is as strong as reported, 30,000.
His whereabouts is not exactly known.
It is feared he will succeed in slipping
through the net now drawn round him,
and crossing the Shenandoah at some
point above, pass into the Luray Valley
and fall back towards Richmond. Jackson
has the advantage of the country—
every post and bye road—and it will be
almost impossible to catch him.
