BRAZIL ENCOURAGES DESERVING SCHOLARS TO STUDY OVERSEAS

RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 21.-The Brazilian government believes thoroughly in sending deserving art and technical students to foreign countries to complete their education, and stands ready to give them financial aid to this end. Some go to Europe and others to the United States. but of recent years the lower cost of living in Europe has turned the tide in that direction.

The department of agriculture and the department of industry and commerce each select 30 students yearly for foreign study. A total of 130 students has been sent out by the agricultural branch, 81 of whom selected American colleges. The most popular American school is Southern University, at Baton Rouge, on account of the opportunities offered to study the sugar cane industry. The University of Illinois is second choice and the University of Georgia third.

The department of industry has sent out 65 men. but only 19 went to the United States.

Financial support is furnished for a period of two years. and steamer passage both ways is paid.

The School of Fine Arts, located in Rio de Janeiro gives travel prizes to artists with exceptional ability in painting. engraving. sculpture and architecture. Two may go each year, if worthy talent appears One is selected from work shown at the annual fine arts exhibition and is supported for two years, the remaining prize being given to a member of the graduating class of the School of Fine Arts. the latter, however. receiving an income for five years.

Travel prizes are awarded also to musicians of exceptional talent who graduate at the School of Music in Rio de Janeiro. One student is sent each year for a two years' course.

All of these students have chosen Europe.

The School of Fine Arts and the School of Music are supported by the government.
