Charleston, Oct. 16.
By yesterday morning's mail, we received the "Florida Gazette" of the 29th ult. by which we are enabled to present our readers with the series of intelligence relating to Mexico, from the 12th to the 27th August. These dates, and the occurrences which filled them, had not hitherto reached us:
[City Gaz.
From the Florida Gazette. Sept 29
LATE AND IMPORTANT FROM
NEW SPAIN.
By the politeness of Mr. Charles Vignoles, of this city, to whom we return our unfeigned acknowledgements, we have been obligingly furnished with a translated copy of the following interesting intelligence from New Spain, published in the Havana paper of the 17th inst. brought by the schooner Stamper, Capt. Lyon, who arrived here on the 27th, in 8 days from that port.
Havana, 17th Sept. 1821:
We present our readers the following copy of a private letter from Cordova, written by a respectable gentleman of Vera Cruz, to his friend in this city, by the schooner Teresa, which arrived yesterday in 19 days passage. Also another from Vera Cruz, written to a friend of ours, containing very interesting particulars of the interview between general O'Donoju and gen. Iturbide, and the results concluded upon.
[The private letter alluded to above, is from Don Jose Bellido, to Senior Don Jose Mariano Almanza, dated Cordova, 24th August, 1821, and so nearly corresponds with the one of the 27th, we have omitted it.]
Vera Cruz, 27th August, 1821.
My Dear Friend—By the frigate Andrea, which sailed yesterday, I sent my latest advices, and now add, that yesterday several letters from Cordova of the 23d, and last night three of the 24th from Atourez, the secretary of state, of gen. O'Donoju, from Don Lorenzo Murphy, and from the treasurer of Valladolid, Don Miguel Bellido, were received.
It appears by them: that upon the 22d general O'Donoju entered into Cordova; and on the 23d at night, general Iturbide, between two rows of wax torches, the inhabitants forming a street; and several illuminated triumphal arches, firing of cannon, music and every thing that could manifest the rejoicing. He proceeded to the church and thence to his house, where general O'Donoju was waiting for him, and where they held a courteous and satisfactory interview.
General O'Donoju had returned but a short time to his house, when Iturbide went to call on him with all his suite, which it is said was brilliant and numerous.
On the 24th Gen. Iturbide repeated his visit, and they entered upon the conference, which was no sooner over than Bellido entered to see Gen. O'Donoju, who said to him, full of delight, "Every thing is concluded, and I am transported with, a feeling of joy which the testimony of the most glorious actions alone could produce. I have proposed nothing which has not been acceded to, and nothing has been requested of me which is not founded in reason. Our treaties will be published to-morrow, and the whole kingdom will witness the union of the reciprocal interests of two great nations."
General Iturbide dined at the house of Gen. O'Donoju, who gave the first toast to the former chief, and he returned the second to him; and the third was drank by the whole company to them both.— The dinner lasted till six in the evening.
Murphy writes word that on the same evening of the 24th, or at day break of the 25th, Iturbide set off for Puebla, and that Gen. O'Donoju will depart immediately.
His secretary, Alvarez, acquaints me for his Excellency, that the first leisure moment shall be devoted to informing me of every thing that has taken place deserving attention; and as a schooner is about to sail hence immediately, I hasten to send you this favorable news.
The "Riqueime" is ready, and only waiting for the two commissioners who are to carry to Spain the Treaties of Cordova, they are expected every moment.
I request that by the first vessel which sails from Cadiz, you will forward the enclosed to Izasy, and the other accompanying one to Murphy at Madrid, to any other port in Spain or France, by the first best sailing vessel.
This instant the express from Cordova has arrived, by which I learn that the Resolutions of Cordova are as follows:
