CHICAGO -- The Taft- Hartley Law "is a threat to everything we stand for in America," United Mine Workers President John L. Lewis declared here recently.
The fiery UMW leader addressed a large audience at a luncheon of the Executives Club. Chicago's top business leaders.
He said T-H was designed to abolish unions when the opportunity arises--"such as another depression." He added that American industry must depend on workers' purchasing power, and if that disappears with the destruction of unions. American industry's markets are gone.
It is not possible to dream of eliminating labor unions from our economy and to think that our Republic will endure." Lewis declared. "There would be confusion and chaos. We have a free economy that can only function as ever-increasing units of production find a market for their goods." He charged that T-H is aimed at wrecking collective bargaining and therefore threatens buying power.
Lewis told the business big- wigs that America is the last stand of capitalism against communism and he urged labor and management to get together to "protect the American political and economic edifice" for future generations.
