A FRIEND IN TIME OF NEED.

LONDON,
December 9.

Extract of a letter from the Hague, Nov. 25.

LETTERS from Amsterdam give an account that Paul Jones, in consequence of the injunctions of the States General to sail with the first fair wind, had actually sailed, but that the famous Capt. Cunningham, who escaped out of prison in England, and was to have gone with Jones, has altered his intention, and is gone to Paris.

The English Ambassador certainly received the answer from the States General to his last memorial on Saturday, the substance of which has been already published; and we are further informed, that the cities of Dordrecht, Haerlem, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Schiedam, and the Brill, particularly the third, have protested highly against the contents of the answer, and have even had their protestations registered, and in which they required the expression "to oblige Paul Jones by force to sail, if he would not do it by fair means," should be erased from the said answer, as being incompatible with the dignity of the republic, and may, in future, be prejudicial to it, &c. But the corps of Nobles, and the other towns, reported, that it was not time now to be taken up with such minutiae, and persisted that the answer should be delivered to the English Ambassador as it was; for which there was also a majority of voices in the Assembly.
