Full Text

Extracts of a letter, dated Camp, Philadelphia, July 31, from a Massachusetts officer.

"THE very cordial and hospitable reception which our officers have received from every rank of citizens in this place, entitles them to our most unfeigned and respectful acknowledgment; and to omit a tribute of our gratitude on this occasion, would very deservedly be deemed un soldier-like, to say nothing of ingratitude. The sumptuous and bountiful entertainment, given by the merchants of this city, to the officers of the federal army, on Friday the 18th current, was elegant and liberal; the powers of description are inadequate to the task of doing justice to the order, good humour and good breeding, manifested on that day: in fine, nothing could exceed the brilliancy of the festival, but the mirth and jocularity conspicuous throughout the whole entertainment."
