Ever since Chanel decided to tailor chiffon--it was just after the war—others of the couture have been following her lead. Now we have all manner of frou-frou fabrics, tailored to the Queen's taste.
Lace is especially well liked on rather severe lines. Starching it helps a lot. There are also crin laces well able to stand on their own even without the assistance of taffeta, which is usually accorded them. Paquin has done really exquisite things with lace this season and is one of those who sponsors black satin for the pre-autumn daytime fashion.
Vionnet scored at the recent openings with her open-work chiffon dresses for evening. Organdie, both printed, plain and embroidered, was included in all of the important showings. This is easy enough to understand in a season in which the vaporous frock is the headliner. Several of the houses advocated ruffles in such materials on both skirt and bodice.
If you are the tall, stately type set on going in for Greek draperies and all that sort of thing, net may not have an interest for you but it should. Why not flutter forth in a beruffled net just by way of doing the unexpected?
The two costumes illustrated are sponsored for summer evening wear.
The model at the left is done in an Indian plaid, and makes a point of covered shoulders, buttoned details and bows and a widely flaring skirt.
The companion costume, developed in dotted pique, also puffed sleeves and easily fitted jacket as well as the wide skirt, are noteworthy.
