At 16 He Was Helping to
Run Down Deserters;
Fought at Weldon
One of the few Confederate
veterans
left
in
Henderson
county is P. P. Johnson, who
lives on the Dana road, R F. D.
No. 1 from Hendersonville, and
who will be 87 years of age on
October 3, 1933.
At the age of sixteen years
Mr. Johnson joined the home
guards and helped to run down
deserters. At 17 years of age
he enlisted in the Confederate
army in the company command-
ed by Capt. Preston Lane.
Mr. Johnson relates that the
first night after leaving home,
with other men, to join the Con-
federate army, fifteen members
of the party deserted and went
to the Union army.
Mr. Johnson served about a
year in the army and fought
in a battle near Weldon, N. C.
Mr. Johnson is exceptionally
active for a man of his years
and does farm work more or
less regularly.
