JANUARY 4.

Whatever may be Mr. Burke's opinion as to the general consequences of the French revolution, every rational and unprejudiced man will allow that it has been productive of at least one good effect, the deliverance of the great body of the people from ecclesiastical oppression. The present mode of supporting the national clergy of France, is certainly more consistent with political wisdom, as well as primitive piety, than that which had subsisted in that kingdom previous to the revolution, and at present subsists in this kingdom—tythes.
