Full Text
The prospects of Mr. Blaine have materially strengthened the past week by several additional state delegations Kansas, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Illinois and New Hampshire, having pledged the whole or a major part of their votes for him at the Convention. His friends already claim a majority on the first ballot, and are correspondingly jubilant.
The press unanimously agree that the promotion of Don Cameron to the Cabinet was a move in Conkling's favor, but think it useless in view of the hearty support evinced for Blaine. The favorite son's friends, however, keep up their hopes yet and mysteriously hint at something yet to turn up Bristow has gained a few votes, while Morton has won quite a number in the South, as was expected. The other Republican candidates remain about the same.
On the Democratic side, Tilden seems to be losing; several prominent papers of his own party opposing him, including the New York World, which advocated Bayard last week, and a few days later, Gen. Hancock.
