July 8.—The Baptist State and Colportage Association in session here, commenced organization Friday by W. R. Howell of Dallas. Revs. C. C. Chaplin, and M. Eastland vice; Hickney Hawkins, recording and Rev. M. V. Smith, corresponding secretary. Crane opened the discussion on relation of Sunday school to common school education. Followed by Dr. J. H. A hymn was then sung, "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name." B. Link opened the discussion on question, "Our colportage work." Claim is upon this convention. Colportage work means the judicious gratuitous distribution as means of this. Convention is to distribute First, the Bible, and denominational literature. But does not mean story books. B. Link said: "From one view there is a relation. We think the state should not adopt any and that we should leave this question out. We can't put the Bible in because Catholics and Jews object to it. and we should cut this out. This makes it necessary to teach religion in the family and in the church school. because the corner stone of our government rests upon foundation of religion. Broad as the foundation should be laid the foundation of instruction. It contemplates employment of men to travel in districts estimate the influence of trashy book-writers? We must counteract this influence by healthy literature. We use colportage to inform the people of denominational tenets, and teach them to obey the Bible." Convention adjourned for dinner.

The executive board of the Texas Baptist Sunday school and colportage convention, after the convention, made its report had made a few pertinent remarks. Rev. Kit Williams developed his idea of the one general superintendent missionary in every association met with a Sunday school appointed by each association of the convention Bro. a proposition from the secretary of the American Baptist publication society with reference to colportage work. Superintendents make mistakes to not attend all meetings and other meetings of church; when he fails to attend teachers' meetings, or is late at them; finds fault with the superintendent. Barrett said: Teachers make mistake often by accepting position of teacher. They are so full of sympathy with children and second, allowing themselves to be imposed on by worthless superintendents. said the grandest mistake is in neglecting to become acquainted with their scholars and their parents. Do not set themselves to teach. Dennis said teachers don't study enough; they put off the study of their lessons: neglect the Bible for the lesson helps; must know something of the home life of the child before you can reach that child with religious influences: teachers mistake when they don't pray enough: take your scholar's name to God.
