Extract of a Letter from Riga, in Livonia.

We have here had the greatest Inundations known in the Memory of Man. They have carried off a great Number of Houses, with all their Contents, into the Sea. We were Spectators of this dismal Misfortune. The Ruins of the Houses, with their Inhabitants, passed by this City; but the Impetuosity of the Torrents prevented us from giving them any Assistance. We have lost all our building Timber in the Neighbourhood; our Buildings, however, have received no Damage from the breaking of the Ice.
