We hear that in consequence of an order of the General Assembly, Newgate prison, in Hartford county, is now in fine order for the reception of criminals, and that 12 culprits are already there, three of whom to continue for life. Last week a negro, called Prince Perkins, was taken from the prison in this city, and deposited in Newgate for one year, agreeable to the sentence of the Superior Court in September last; and, if we may judge from his ingenuity in Burglary, he will doubtless be an expert nailer when his time shall expire.
It is probable the inhabitants of this State will soon feel the good effects of this judicious institution, in being freed from a set of idle, dissolute wretches, who have too long infested the State, and deprived many of the industrious citizens of their property.
It is said that the nailing business is carried on in the above cell, with briskness and regularity.
