"The King and I", a classic retelling of the Civil War novel in dance of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" will be unveiled to Atlanta audiences, March 18, 19, 20, 21 at Spelman College, under the sponsorship of the Atlanta Morehouse Club.
The production by the Atlanta-Morehouse-Spelman Players was a smash hit success and has been presented by theatre groups throughout the country.
"The King and I" one of the most brilliant and original ideas fabricated by the all-time successful team of Rodgers and Hammerstein, is a musical comedy of unbelievable beauty.
It spotlights a ballet, performed in the play, as a separate theatrical vehicle for visiting British royalty and the dance routines are skillfully integrated into the structure of the play itself. Actually, like the novel on which it is based the ballet makes a plea for the abolition of slavery in the Kingdom of Siam.
All of the familiar characters in Harriet Beecher Stowe's all-time best-seller are featured dancers in the ballet. "Eliza" is Anna Lois Clay; "Little Eva" is Evelyn Sterling.
"Uncle Tom" is danced by Harold Henderson, "Topsy" is recreated by Bertha Singleton; "Simon Legree" by William Mackey and "George", the escaped slave is brought to life by Andrew Phillips.
In addition to these star roles there are four royal dancers: Ann Ford, Herschelle Sullivan, Dorothy Robinson and Yvonne Robinson.
The ballet promises to be one of the high spots in "The King and I." J. Preston Cochran is choreographer and his assistants are W. V. Harper and Miss Geneva Weaver.
Royal Singers who appear in the production are being coached by Wendell Whalum.
Baldwin W. Burroughs, director of the Atlanta-Morehouse-Spelman Players had the herculean task of moulding all of the separate but related scenes and dances into a fast-moving production.
"The King and I" will be precedent-setting in many ways. In addition to closed student performances, the Atlanta Morehouse Club will sponsor the four night public performances. Tickets for these performances are being handled by alumni groups.
New York drama critics have hailed "The King and I" and the Atlanta production will rival any presented by similar Little Theatre groups throughout the nation. It will be brilliantly-costumed and rollicking with music as only Rodgers and Hammerstein can bring alive.
