644 farmers in Ashe county have already received a total of $20,465 for complying with the provisions of the soil conservation program last year. About 700 other farmers have in applications and will receive approximately $20,000.00, too, it is stated.
In other words, local officials estimate that Ashe will get about $40,000.00 in benefit payments for 1937, as compared with $24,585.95 for 1936, which will be a gain of over $15,000.00. More checks are arriving weekly and farmers are notified just as soon as their checks reach the county agent's office.
North Carolina received a total of $12,304,301.35 for complying with the federal soil conservation act in 1936 and the total national outlay for 1936 was $398,230,333.00.
This law was enacted as a substitute for the old AAA law held unconstitutional by the supreme court on the grounds that it illegally levied a processing tax.
Watauga got $19,956, Caldwell, $17,711.02 and Wilkes, $32,424.50.
