CUMMINS MEETING AT DES MOINES

Republicans of the State Unanimously in Favor of the Iowa Senator For President

The Cummins movement to make Iowa's senior senator the republican nominee for president received great impetus at the Friday night meeting in Des Moines in the opinion of the Cummins men here. Many parts of the state were represented and it proved to be a get together meeting in every respect. Old time stand pat leaders united with progressives and the speeches indicated that the republican party of Iowa will be united at the forthcoming election.

It was in fact the first big meeting of the 1916 republican campaign. The weaknesses of President Wilson's administration were shown up by the public men who have been in a position to know the facts and to interpret them.

Senator Cummins pointed out that the country is hard up. "We have had a democratic administration for three years," he said, "and the result is a bankrupt treasury confronting us. Never before in the last twenty-five years has there been less money in the treasury than now. They must now find some other way to get revenue or bring dishonor to the United States. The administration said it would pay expenses. Expenses have been multiplied in a way never before known in any administration. We may be confronted with the horrible necessity of issuing bonds."

E. R. Moore of Cedar Rapids, candidate for lieutenant governor, rapped the "lying reports" of the treasury, the plan of establishing a silk stocking army, the "wrecking of the rural mail service" and the lack of business judgment of the administration.

Bernard Murphy of the Vinton Eagle declared that President Wilson or no other man could finance this government on the sale of revenue stamps. He said this country needed a protective tariff and a republican administration.

The leaders declared that the conditions in Europe demanded that the president of the United States have sound business judgment for the United States is coming to be the financial power of the world.
