LONDON, (P) - The Beefeaters will continue to appear in religious parades and perform other extra chores besides guarding and decorating the Tower of London.
The Beefeaters yeoman warders of the tower, whose Tudor costumes of red and blue are well known to tourists had threatened to stop doing traditional extra duties because the government wanted to raise rents on their quarters in the Tower.
The Civil Service Union announced Friday "a very satisfactory settlement."
Rents will go up as scheduled from the equivalent of 70 cents a week to $2.80, but at the same time, a supplemental allowance will be raised from $1.12 to $4.90.
So the Beefeaters will come out $1.68 ahead.
