On the Colonization of Free People of Color:—respectfully addressed to the Abolition Societies.
Bless'd be the virtuous man, whose ardent mind,
(From grov'ling, earthly interest refined)
Elicited the spark of heav'nly fire.
Which, kindling as it flies, shall ne'er expire ;
Thousands unborn shall bless the sacred flame,
And sons, of sires, demand the holy name.
Ages have roll'd away, and the dread crime
Of SLAV'RY still pollutes this blissful clime:
Year after year, these hardy sons of toil
Have gone, as heir-looms, with the passive soil.
Oh! were this all!—Alas! for thirst of gold;
The sons of Africa still are stol'n and sold—
It is not all—I shudder whilst I tell,
Their miseries call forth the "laugh of hell."
Sons OF AMERICA! stem, stem the flood,
"And learn the luxury of doing good!"
If zeal, if eloquence, have power to move,
Then may the agent* in this work of love
Rest satisfied; for he has done his part,
To rouse the mind, and animate the heart:
"To his white standard, gathering round,
"Wit, Worth, and Parts, and Eloquence are found."
And that soft sex, where gentlest virtues dwell,
Whose hearts with nature's purest feelings swell,
Shall join the cause, the sacred cause of man,
And add their "mite" to organize the plan.
The chains of prejudice no more shall bind
The nobly just, or fetter the pure mind.
Through error's mist the sun of truth shall shine.
And white men hail this sentiment divine:
God fram'd of one dust all sons of earth,
And his creative power gave all men birth!
"One is their Parent, and that parent good,
"Whose num'rous children claim an equal blood."
"It is CHRISTIAN CHARITY illumes the day,
And sheds on Afric's race a cheering ray—
Still brighter may it beam, and still extend
That bond of union, which bids mis'ry end!"
* Rev. William Meade, of Frederic county, Va.
