ORDER OF MERIT.
It is stated in the N. Y. Courier, that the President of the United States has sent to New-York a "handsome Medal to be presented to Jackson McGowan, son of Mr Benson McGowan, of Harlein. Mr McGowan, is one of our old thorough-going republicans, and a staunch supporter of the man of the people."—This, we believe, is the first attempt in this country to introduce the European system of "badges of distinction," as a reward for personal devotion. What public service has Mr Benson Mc Gowan rendered, that he should be thus distinguished? "Resist at the outset" is a sound maxim for republicans. If warm political partizans are to be rewarded with "handsome medals" from the President, we may as well have "A Legion of Honor" at once.
