The Person who went by the Name of John Hull, that was lately described in the New York and Newport Papers, and also in the Evening-Post of the 16th ult. and in this Paper of the 10th, has since made his Appearance in this Town, and pretended to be the Son of a Gentleman in Virginia of that Name : -- that he was coming to this Place in a Vessel from thence laden with Grain, &c. but that the Vessel foundered off Block-Island, and that himself and his Hands were taken up by a Coaster, which carried them into Taunton or Dartmouth, from whence they travelled by land, excepting the Mate, Who, they said, Was left on the Road sick : -- With this plausible Story he made Application to the Owners of a Vessel bound to Maryland, for a Passage for himself and CREW, promising to make great Returns if the Vessel was consigned to him : Upon which they were promised a Passage, and well entertained for several Days besides being kindly supplied with necessary Cloathing ; but the aforesaid Description being published, he with his Comrades made off ; however they were soon pursued, and said Hull was taken at Dedham, from whence he was brought to Town, and committed to Goal.

Event Details
The person known as John Hull, previously described in New York, Newport, and Boston papers, appeared in Boston claiming to be the son of a Virginia gentleman. He said his grain-laden vessel foundered off Block Island, and he and his crew were rescued and landed in Taunton or Dartmouth, traveling by land except for the sick mate. He sought passage to Maryland for himself and crew from vessel owners, promising consignments. They were promised passage and provided clothing and entertainment. Upon publication of his description, he and comrades fled but were pursued; Hull was captured at Dedham and imprisoned.
