Contradictory reports from the Spanish Main on the revolutionists' success: one claims full tide of success, another details Bolivar's defeats at Carupano on June 19, landing at Chorony on July 5, routs on July 10-12 near Caracas, with heavy casualties among insurgents.

The report from the Spanish Main, relative to the success of the revolutionists is very contradictory. One account represents them in the full tide of success. The other dated July 14, at Laguira, ten leagues from the city of Caraccas, states that Bolivar was defeated, at Carupano June 19, that he landed at Chorony July 5, but on attempting to advance to Caraccas, 14 leagues distant, he was attacked by the royalists and put to flight—that on being reinforced he again attempted to penetrate to the interior, but was attacked July 10, by the royalist troops, and completely routed—that on the 11th they fortified themselves under shelter of their vessels, but were pressed so hard, that of 500 who debarked, only 200 escaped—that several of the prisoners went to Caraccas—that on the 12th there was great slaughter among the insurgents, and that Morales had put to the sword all who could not embark. In a few particulars the accounts agree.

Where they differ it is impossible to say which is correct. We are inclined to the opinion that Bolivar, the Revolutionary Chief, has not been very successful.
