WASHINGTON-CITY, Feb. 27.

Indian hostilities.—The following is an extract of a letter from a gentleman at St. Charles, Louisiana Territory, dated January 10, 1812.

"In answer to your inquiry respecting Indian hostilities in this quarter, I have to inform you that some of the reports that have found their way into the public prints, are much exaggerated, but are generally true.—The depredations committed by them have been principally in Indiana and Illinois territories; some horses have been taken in this territory, but I believe no murders have been committed by them for the last ten or twelve months. I had flattered myself that the drubbing given to them by the troops under the command of Governor Harrison would have disposed them to return to order. It appears I was mistaken, for this day by an express from Fort Madison, we are informed of cruel murders committed on some traders about two miles above that Fort by a party of the Peccant nation. A Mr. Hunt, son of the late Col. Hunt of the United States' army, and Mr. Prior, a trading house about three miles distant, were attacked by a party of three Indians, who gained admittance into the house until they came from a quarter of a mile distant, then they seized two men and a boy. Mr. Hunt who had with him an English man discovered in the house, and that told and packed on their horses carried him that believed that on account of them they had goods him bad had off. They intended another party to kill Prior and carry off goods, and that they intended in a short time to take the Fort which they would me on and kill every American they could. They took Mr. Hunt and his boy with them on Son. The hostilities that have taken place. ians there pressing we believe go very to that warm war re dhry with work set are on England diecermined by quarter British I calcniate leads for agents war ine on.
