J. C. Tovrea of the Tovrea Packing Company was elected president of the Nogales Rotary Club Friday to succeed Dr. E. C. Houle, resigned.
Dr. Houle, who had been elected recently, resigned when he learned that two or three physicians in this county are to be called into military service shortly.
The new Rotary executive was born in Sparta, Ill., March 26, 1873 and came to Arizona Aug. 11, 1892-50 years ago next month. He first located at Gila Bend, then Phoenix, Bisbee, Congress, Mesa, and settled at Nogales Dec. 31, 1915.
He is a brother of the late E. A. Tovrea, founder of the Tovrea Packing Company, who located in Arizona in 1885 or 1886. E. A. Tovrea first lived in Ash Fork, then Phoenix, and his first meat shop was at Gila Bend in 1893. In 1918 he founded the Arizona Packing Company and 10 or 12 years later it became known as the Tovrea Packing Company.
J. C. Tovrea has been a Rotarian 21 years, joining the Nogales club shortly after it was founded in 1921.
