We have already received several letters from the Literati, whom the court has sent to the different provinces of the Empire, to observe there the passage of Venus over the sun's disk. The Sieurs Pallas and Lepechin, who were to go to Orenbourg, have not been able, by reason of the winter, to get farther than Sinbirsk. They observe, that by the beginning of August it freezes there in the night; that from the 15th of September to the 18th, the liquor in de Lisle's thermometer fell in the night-time from 16° to 16.5 degrees, and that in Reaumur's thermometer to 5 and a half degrees beneath the point O; that the ground was almost everywhere covered with snow, and that the cold continued with so much rigour that not only the standing corn, but even the young trees were all frozen.
