Full Text

It is with the greatest pleasure we have received and published the account of the gallant conduct of our fellow citizens at Stonington, in the state of Connecticut. If such conduct were universal, the enemy, at every approach, would be foiled and put to the route. There is no safety but in courage. Had the inhabitants of Stonington basely surrendered their town to the British troops, they would have lost all their worldly goods, besides their honor. But now they have preserved both; and their brave countrymen, applauding their heroism, will rush to their aid from every quarter. In spite of the tories, we can perceive that the country is becoming unanimous. The royalists must hide their heads, or they will be punished. Indeed, every day the actions of our tars and soldiers develope the greatness of the American character. We have, more and more, a country to love and reverence. It is not only that we belong to the country of Washington, Hancock, Adams, Jefferson, and other worthies, but we belong to the land of Hull, Bainbridge, Decatur, Rodgers, Lawrence, Brown, Scott, Miller and Ripley: We belong to a country where great dangers produces great talents and great virtues. When the battle of Chippewa and Bridgewater are known in London, the sorry scolding typographical knaves of St. James will change their tone. They will be astonished at their own ignorance of our moral & physical resources, of their want of knowledge of America—of that America which is destined to avenge the wrongs of the world, by chastising the insolent Britons—those vile islanders, the basis of whose power is gold, corruption and the bloodiest tyranny.
