Members Addressed on Female Suffrage by Miss Frances Anderson
A meeting of unusual interest was held at the Woman's Club last Saturday, when Miss Frances Anderson addressed the club on "Woman's Suffrage." It was a pleasure to welcome Miss Anderson among us, and a privilege to hear her so charmingly and forcefully talk on this subject of vital interest to each of us.
All business was deferred until another meeting; and, with her usual grace, Mrs. Jack Camp, president of the club, introduced Miss Anderson, as follows:
"In days gone by the very name of 'woman's suffrage' made the retiring dame of our mother's days shudder with dread.
"Like many other unknown things, it has become clearer and clearer as we approach it, and now, every modern woman, if not an avowed suffragist, knows at least, what woman's suffrage stands for. We also know that many laws relating to the rights of mothers and of widowed or orphaned women have been passed only at the instance of these followers of, and believers in, woman's suffrage.
"We have also learned that the advocates are women of sweetness of manner and womanliness of bearing. It is my pleasure this afternoon to present to you just such a woman, who will speak to us on the subject, knowing that whether in sympathy with her subject or not, she can count on us as being in sympathy with the speaker."
Miss Anderson's address was very clear and convincing. The Star will present it to its readers in a day or two.
At the close of Miss Anderson's address, an informal reception was held, and a very delightful half-hour was spent by the club members and their many guests for the afternoon, with Miss Anderson.
Misses Lucy Moorhead, Annie Davis, Isabel Maves, Annie Atkinson and Lois Ellis were hostesses at this meeting and served dainty sandwiches and refreshing tea.
