For Vice-Pres.
Postal Alliance
Maurice Haynes, postal clerk in the Minneapolis main post office, and editor of the North Star Branch newsletter, has filed to run for vice president of the National Alliance of Postal Employees' 7th District. This District is composed of Chicago, Evanston, Milwaukee, Detroit, Flint, Minneapolis and St. Paul.
North Star Branch president, L Richard Riess, in making the announcement in the branch's newsletter said that he had received a call from the Chicago Branch executive board urging Maurice Haynes to run for the office. Accordingly, he said, Haynes has filed to run for the office.
Haynes, upon being informed that the North Star Branch executive board also had endorsed him as the vice presidential candidate for the district, said, "If elected, I will do my best to make the district an alert, forward-looking unit of service to each of its member branches."
Of the nation's 550,000 postal workers, Haynes figures about one-fifth are Negro. He thinks the N.A.P.E., which is a predominantly Negro welfare organization, does a lot in the interest of Negroes unions dominated by whites would not want to usually do.
For instance, the Alliance is "dedicated to the principle that everyone gets the same chance to advance, by his own merits and abilities not hindered by race, creed or color," says Haynes, "and we in the Postal Alliance are currently working for the passage of a law to end discrimination in the purchase of homes in restrictive areas."
Not too many years ago the white locals had lily-white clauses in their by-laws, and today the integrated Northern postal unions can't discipline, or withdraw charters of affiliated southern segregated unions.
Within the post office system, the Alliance helped to have the photograph eliminated as part of the application requirements.
The North Star Branch, composed of postal employees of the Twin City area, will have its regular meeting, Saturday, February 11, at 800 W. Central, in St. Paul. At this meeting, Mr. Haynes will seek the support of the entire membership in his quest for the district vice presidency.
