Extract of a letter from a gentleman who has lately travelled through Virginia.

I have lately returned from a visit to Monticello, where every thing I saw served to increase the admiration and respect I feel for the character of its enlightened possessor. It is at home, in the bosom of his family, surrounded by his friends and numerous connections with eight lovely grandchildren, a constant levee of grateful tenants, most of them rent free for life, with other objects of his daily bounty, and an endless succession of travelling visitors, that you see him display, untinctured by pride or arrogance, all the virtues which can adorn a man and dignify his nature. Nor is his habitation and its local situation less calculated to inspire regard; the seat of science and of arts, embellished within and without by every thing that a refined taste and improved mind could suggest, it presents a happy union of convenience and comfort, with an elegance of appearance commanding and majestic. A full description of his library museum, collections and paintings, would far exceed the bounds of a letter, or any powers of delineating that I possess. When we meet I will endeavor to possess you with a faint idea of them. I only wish his political enemies could truly view him as he is, in his private life.
