The chief amusement Thursday evening was a political meeting of the greenback stripe, in Representative Hall. The men who favor economy felt too poor to hire a hall for their demonstration of patriotism, and so voted themselves the use of this State building. The tax payers were called upon to pay for gas and for the wear and tear upon furniture and building, that this important branch of society might applaud its own sayings. The grade of speaking was very low indeed. Fogg and Perry and a few young men, made fair speeches; but they were so wild and distant in their statements that few thinking men could endorse them. The speech which drew forth most applause was that of one of the folder, a great man, about six feet high, and broad shouldered. This party is doing a boy's work, when he should be earning his living by honest toil. He made a complete ass of himself. There was no hybrid there. And yet full grown men sat and applauded his buffoonery. Then there was a doctor from Augusta, who with flowing locks, white vest and neck-tie, told of his love for the laboring classes. He indulged in personal abuse of Mr. Blaine, and of course received a reception second only to that of his predecessors in the dissemination of nonsense. We have judged the greenback party from Oxford County men, and thus thought it strong. If, however, its representatives are such animals as we have seen at Augusta, from other parts of the State, the party is doomed to early defeat. The people of Maine will not be led by a party of clowns.
