Event Details
The announcement that the Atrato or Truando route for an interoceanic ship canal had been pronounced impracticable by the recent survey appears premature. Distance alleged now 150, not 250 miles. Route condemned by Mr. Trautwine is via Raspadura pass, pointed out by Humboldt as most feasible. Late Atrato expedition sent by our Government to verify Mr. Kennish's 1854 survey of Truando route, when he crossed from ocean to ocean by this pass. Lieut. Michler's report treats only directions and distances, differing little from Mr. Kennish; his opinion of availability not yet expressed until field notes digested.
