Wanted 1,000,000,000 Eggs By Athens, Ga. Chamber of Commerce

The Chamber of Commerce, Athens, Ga. has on a campaign to increase the production of eggs in Northeast Georgia. They have had published and circulated a bulletin entitled "Wanted from Northeast Georgia Farms 1,000,000,000 Eggs Worth $35,000,000."

This bulletin was prepared by Joe E. Bell, Head, Department of Poultry Husbandry, and Curtis H. Collier, Extension Poultry Marketing Specialist, The University of Georgia.

The bulletin says:

"Mr. Northeast Georgia Farmer:

"Would you like to increase your farm income?

"Would you like to get more money for the grain you produce?

"Would you like to further improve your land and conserve your soil?

"Would you like a better way of life?

"If you are interested in these things, then you might be interested in COMMERCIAL EGG PRODUCTION.

"Georgia Needs:

"1,000,000,000 more eggs annually currently worth about $35,000,000. These eggs now come from other sections of the country — the eggs come in and the money goes out - This is not necessary. They can be produced at home.

"More fresh eggs are needed — A fresh egg is always better and worth more than a storage or old egg. You, Mr. Farmer, can produce and market an egg superior to the shipped storage egg.

"The Egg and the Land:

"Northeast Georgia Farms are comparatively small, thus intensive farm enterprises are needed to raise the income per farm.

"Poultry is an intensive type of farming and the fertilizer from this enterprise added to the land makes it more productive.

"Increased yields of grain mean more feed.

"Feed fed to laying hens and sold as eggs give higher returns than when sold any other way.

"Small grains on the land during the winter and spring months reduce erosion.

"Returns From 300 Hens:

"Assuming that a flock of 300 hens averages 168 eggs each (14 dozen) and that the price received is 45 cents per dozen, the total receipts from eggs in one year would be $1900.

"Allowing 15 per cent mortality, which is high, the sale value of culls during the year and of the flock at the end of the year should amount to at least $400, or a total return from the flock of $2300, from the beginning of the laying year to the end.

"The cost of growing the flock to laying age should not exceed $600. The feed consumed during the laying year will be $500 for commercial mash and 350 bushels of small grain and corn produced on the farm.

"Allowing $100 for miscellaneous items, the total expenditures do not exceed $1200 for the laying year. This leaves a difference of $1100 as the returns on labor and the grain produced.

"At the same time the litter from the poultry is going back to the soil to increase the productivity of the land.

"You Have A Market:

"The major problem in commercial egg production in the past has been the market - There has never been one nearby. This is no longer a problem.

"The Athens Chamber of Commerce is guaranteeing you, Mr. Farmer, a market for your eggs every day in the year.

"This organization realizes that for business to prosper, the farmer must prosper. It believes that commercial egg production is suited for the Northeast Georgia Area and is willing to lend a helping hand with the most crucial problem in order to help build a more prosperous area."
